I knew that death wasn't permanent here, but I don't really know any of the details of how that works. I've been more focused on trying to keep people from dying in the first place.
Maybe we can't change everything. We can't hunt down the scientists or figure out a way home.
But to stop someone from being killed or hurt when they're right here with us... I think that's something a person can do. Even if it's only one person.
Sometimes, It isn't that simple. Even if you try to prevent something, it can still happen. It may be worse than it originally would have been, or it may be better. There really is no telling.
[Danny slumps and shoves his hands in his pockets, his entire attitude practically screaming disinterested teenager. An attitude entirely at odds with his words and the quiet determination in his voice.]
If you can't tell either way, there's no point in not trying to make things better.
Perhaps. However, some find that it is that gamble that may make things worth it. Unfortunately, I have gambled with the odds more then I should have while here. It is time to take a step back for myself.
[Danny's first instinct is to deny everything. But he catches himself before he can say anything. That... It wouldn't help here. Don had proved that. Better to allow some of the truth out, to protect his deepest secrets.]
I've never died here. But that doesn't mean I can't want to stop other people from getting hurt.
[Danny winces. And this would be the part of the conversation he'd been dreading.]
It's kind of a long story. The kind of story I really don't like talking about. I guess you could say that I have... certain abilities that the chip is blocking.
Then your sister is a smart girl and probably has more common sense than you do. And if that is the case, as much as I'm sure it probably is, she can protect herself. As for Donatello, he's alive and well now and has his family to protect him.
You should focus more on keeping yourself out of trouble so you don't need to be rescued or do the rescuing.
Jazz is a genius. But she can be pretty stupid about practical stuff sometimes. And.. she knows what I'm planning. She agrees with me. That it's worth the risk.
Doesn't change the fact that it wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for me. I couldn't even tell that the situation was dangerous until it was too late.
[He snorts bitterly.]
Me? Stay out of trouble? Trouble has a way of finding me.
All great geniuses have that problem. Perhaps I should be talking to her instead of you.
[There's a soft snort.]
That particular brand of idiocy comes with youth. I don't see how regaining any abilities you have would have helped save you from your own stupidity. The fact that you dragged Donatello along only makes you look more irresponsible.
[That last comment makes her laugh.]
The more you speak, the more you remind me of a certain young man from my home.
I can't explain without saying what I can do. And... it's the kind of thing that the people from my world and especially my family can't ever find out about. And Mom was here once. So I can't let it become common knowledge even here. Right now only Don, Jazz, and Seras know.
I don't think my parents would ever be able to recover if they found out.
I agree that it was youthful stupidity and it was probably both yours and Donatello's fault. As for whatever this secret is, if you need to hide it from your parents, then it cannot be beneficial to have so therefore you are better without it.
As for whether that is a good or a bad thing, I'm not sure. Tenchi tended to get himself involved into some of the most interesting circumstances.
Nice sentiment, but it doesn't work that way. I should know. I've tried to get rid of it before, and it only makes everything worse. Whether I can touch that part of myself or not, it doesn't change what I am. The only difference is that I can't protect myself like this. Much less anyone else.
[By this point Danny has completely dropped any pretense of ordinary and klutzy Danny Fenton. He was acting as Phantom, now.]
My parents... They're great, but they can't know. They've tried to dissect me. They've shot at me and tried to tear me apart molecule by molecule. Even if they didn't know it was me, years of therapy can't get you over something like that.
What makes you think I won't try the same thing? I am a scientist of considerable more skill than any human living past or present. I may be able to succeed where they failed.
[Gone is her kind nature, all that's left is the scientist. She's tired of 'beating around the bush.']
The way you talk means that whatever is being suppressed is making you feel unfinished. A sentiment I can sympathize with. However, whatever the power is has yet to be named. You dance around the bush Danny Fenton and I dislike being left in the dark.
It may provoke me to shed some light on the subject. My way. I don't care if it is for your protection or the protection of others. I have removed chips on a whim before simply to see what ones power will do to the city. However, I don't appreciate not being told what I am releasing.
Partial information was what got me killed in the first place.
Why do you think I put this off so long? But I'm willing to risk it if it means I can stop people from getting hurt on my watch.
[There is a small challenging note in his voice now. Oddly, the shift to the scientist has made him more comfortable with the entire situation. This was familiar.]
You want to know what I am? Fine. Two years ago I walked inside an experimental portal to another dimension. It turned on when I was inside.
[Washu dissects the information provided. Oh she knew that there was more to the story. What he had told her already gave her a few good hints. Regardless, more information was needed.]
You're parents were idiots to attempt something like that. They could have easily disrupted the balance of their reality and made it collapse around them, wiping out both dimensions.
If by 'halfa' you mean halfbreed then yes. Tenchi is part human and part Juraian royalty.
By the sounds of it, your parents lack even less common sense then normal no matter how flexible the other dimension is. Their home dimension would suffer.
How can I be sure these ghost powers of yours will not be used to destroy anyone or damage the city? Further more, how can I be sure they won't rebound and injure myself or anyone in the vicinity of the hospital.
I know that even when I'm not thinking straight all of my instincts say run away. And... I made a promise a long time ago that I would always use my powers to do the right thing.
What would you accept as proof? You could ask Don or Jazz. Don knows more about me than anyone else in Discedo. And Jazz knows everything that happened in my world.
I would hope that even if they rebounded they would only affect me. But... I had a plan for that. My Mom... she left behind some of her anti-ghost inventions. It would hurt, but I could seal myself in the thermos until it was over.

I... made a promise. To myself. A long time ago. That I would never ignore a cry for help. and to do the right thing. No matter the cost.
But I get it. Even if death isn't permanent around here, I don't imagine it has a great effect on anyone.
...Not that I have any experience with it or anything.

Re: [Locked]
Date: 2010-08-08 03:10 am (UTC)The last chip I removed was to let the patient regain a useful ability to help save her life. In return she took mine.
The entire unpleasant incident could have been avoided by simply saying No.
[Pause]
What else would you call this urge to save people? If that isn't a hero complex, then I'm not a scientist.
Re: [Locked]
Date: 2010-08-08 03:25 am (UTC)But Don almost died. From a situation I should have been able to pull us both out of with no trouble at all. And my sister is here now.
